I didn’t understand a lot of what O’Sensei talked about, but I’m thankful that I’ve had a few years of training in a dojo that introduced me to the philosophy of the art before starting this book. Also by Morihei Ueshiba. Even if you are not interested in martial arts, but would like to find a different and nonviolent approach to life’s experiences, this is still a worth reading.

OTOH, much of what he was talking about wasn’t mystical at all, if you have the patience to work your way through it. Perhaps my problem with it was that the philosophy of Aikido is so steeped in Shinto.

The introduction was written by his grandson, Moriteru Ueshiba, the present Aikido Doshu. I know, it sounds kind of nuts – but if ssecret look at what he said in the correct context he’s actually describing a very old, and very logical, training model and methodology.

More than likely, it’s not going to be of interest to the majority of students unless students are interested in occult and mysticism. Actually, the English title the secret teachings of aikido a little different than the Japanese, which translates to “The Essence of Aikido”.

If you ask me if it’s possible to get to what he was doing without going though that – I would say yes, absolutely. I haven’t been able to train at the dojo all week due to a head cold, but this book is the next best thing the secret teachings of aikido being there. Anyway, there’s a good bit of very solid technical information contained in what you are reading – but it’s a pain to dig out. I think they mesh well.
